This Month's Topic is Fuel Economy.

With the rise in gas prices ever wonder how you can save money?

There are in fact a few different ways you can save money on gas.

  1. Drive the speed limit and drive sensibly. Most vehicles are most efficient at approximately 100km with efficiency dropping off rapidly from there. In most cases for every 8km (5mph) you drive over the speed limit you lose approximately 7% of your fuel efficiency.
  2. Remove excess weight and avoid idling for long periods of time.
  3. Keep your car in good shape, a properly tuned car burns less gas and gives off less emissions than one that has been neglected. In some cases a failed Oxygen sensor or other major component can decrease fuel mileage by half!
  4. Keep your tires properly inflated! Not only does under inflation hurt your tires and adversely affect your cars handling, it also hurts fuel mileage.
  5. Use cruise control, in most cases keeping a steady speed for a long period of time will save you gas instead of accelerating and braking constantly to maintain speed.
  6. Use your A/C sparingly for best results. Air Conditioning can reduce your fuel mileage, and in some cases by a large percentage. Use your A/C when its hot, but don't drive around with the A/C engaged if you don't need it. While you may think that the best way to beat the heat and the pumps is to open the windows, this too can also reduce your fuel mileage to an extent.
  7. Only use the fuels that your vehicle is rated for. You may require 94 octane if you drive an expensive sports car, but you probably don't need it in your Lumina. The gains from higher octane fuel rarely outweigh the somewhat staggering costs.
